It's the Law
|Caption||It's the Law. Left: An accused man might be given a "cursed morsel". He would have to swallow whole a piece of bread or cheese containing an irritant, like a feather. If he choked, it was taken as a sign of his guilt. Right: The pillory. Sometimes an offender would be pelted with stones and bricks by the crowd. But if the accused was well-liked, the crowd could gently mock the judges by throwing flowers, as here. Original artwork for illustrations on pp12-13 of Look and Learn issue no 1003 (30 May 1981).
