Birth of the Salvation Army.  At almost every meeting a violent incident would take place and William Booth himself needed a private bodyguard to protect him from aggressive roughs and urchins.  One of Booth's early helpers was a young medical student called Thomas Barnardo (inset).  Original artwork for illustration on p16 of Look and Learn issue no 655 (3 August 1974).
