Caption | Massacre at Murderers' Bay. With lightning speed, the Maoris fell upon the surprised Dutch sailors. In the fight that followed, the crew of the ship's boat were all killed. Abel Tasman named the place of the massacre "Murderers' Bay" and, without setting foot in New Zealand, sailed off to discover the islands of Tonga. Original artwork for illustration on p10 of Look and Learn issue no 856 (10 June 1978). |
