The River that Didn't Lead to China

The River that Didn't Lead to China. Jacques Cartier (inset) sailed up the St Lawrence in a vain attempt to find a route to Cathay – and instead earned himself the title of "Father of Canada". Walking alone on the shore shortly before his departure for France, Cartier found the once-friendly Indians confronting him angrily. They thought, correctly as it turned out, that Cartier was planning to abduct their chief. Original artwork for illustrations on pp8–9 of Look and Learn issue no 865 (12 August 1978).
