Aztec warriors attacking Hernan Cortes' Spanish Conquistadors in Tenochtitlan after the murder of the Aztec ruler Montezuma, Mexico, 1520. On a dark June night in 1520, Cortes, his hostage Montezuma dead, had to fight his way out of the Aztec capital. Losses were heavy – but within a month he was back to take the city and topple the Aztec empire. Original artwork for illustration on p12 of Look and Learn issue no 849 (22 April 1978).
