Caption | Maori Rebellion. In one of the most heroic episodes of the Maori rebellion, 300 men, women and children besieged in a fortified village vowed to fight for ever against the British. On the third day of the siege they suddenly broke out and charged the British lines – half of them escaped. The British troops later erected a memorial to the gallantry of their enemies in a nearby church. Original artwork for illustration on p7 of Look and Learn issue no 908 (16 June 1979). |
