Puffing Billy

Puffing Billy, a colliery locomotive built by engineer William Hedley, assisted by Timothy Hackworth, who later took part in the Rainhill trials for the LIverpool and Manchester Railway. Left inset shows how, long before steam engines were introduced, horse-drawn trucks running on rails were used at many collieries. Original artwork for illustration on pp16-17 of Look and Learn issue no 968 (27 September 1980).
