Caption | All Clear Ahead. The green disc signal gives the "all clear" for a Great Western train hauled by Sultan, one of Gooch's Iron Duke locomotives, built in the middle of the 19th century. The driver and firemen had no shelter from the weather. Top inset shows portrait of Daniel Gooch. Other insets show a first class coach of the Midland Railway in the 1850s, and details of a locomotive's wheel code. Original artwork for illustration on pp12-13 of Look and Learn issue no 970 (11 October 1980). |
