Caption | Ferdinand Magellan's crossing of the Pacific Ocean, 1521. The conditions on the journey across the Pacific were appalling. Without fresh food or drink, the men were reduced to eating rats and the leather off the yardarms. Magellan must have breathed a sigh of relief when they reached the Philippines where he and his men met friendly natives who were prepared to trade with them for food. Original artwork for illustration on p15 of Look and Learn issue no 940 (26 January 1980). |
