Saturnalia. Pagan festivals were popular with the Romans. The Saturnalia in December, held in honour of the god of Agriculture, provided people with several days of fun. Work was suspended. slaves were freed temporarily, a mock king was chosen, and the carnival atmosphere pervaded everything.
