Caption | Cato the Elder calling for the destruction of Cathage, Third Punic War, 149–146 BC Again and again Roman statesman Cato the Elder reminded his Senate colleagues that Rome would never be safe while Carthage remained. He always ended his speeches – whatever the subject – with the terrible words "Delenda est Carthago" (Carthage Must Be Destroyed). Renowned as an orator, the veteran senator's speeches made a deep impression on the Romans. After two years of failure, Rome appointed Scipio Aemilianus to lead the assault on Carthage. He succeeded with a ruthlessness which still shocks to this day. Original artwork. |
