Caption | The Handful who Conquered an Empire. From the moment Spaniard Hernando Cortes (1485-1547) stepped ashore the mighty Aztec Empire was doomed to destruction. Cortes landed at Tabasco in March 1519. Although the natives were awed by the strange men and the horses, which they had never seen before, they were soon to engage the Spaniards in fierce battle. |
