Caption | The Soldier who Conquered the Seas. Colonel Blake was a complete stranger to naval matters when he was pitched into battle to win maritime supremacy for England. In one of the darkest days in Britain's naval history, the Dutch fell upon Blake's little fleet off the Goodwin Sands. For several months, the Dutch admiral Tromp sailed with a broom at his masthead, boasting that he would sweep any English ships from the Channel. But Blake was to have his revenge.
