Caption | Richard Chancellor, the man who discovered Russia. Richard Chancellor had originally been part of an expedition to find a north-east passage to China. Instead, he landed in Russia and sealed an important trade agreement with its Tsar, Ivan the Terrible. The illustration shows how, hammered by a storm, Richard Chancellor's ship found a safe anchorage at Vardo, the expedition's agreed rendezvous in an emergency. But none of the other ships arrived to join him. |
