Caption | The Price of Loyalty. On whose side the mercenary armies fought depended on who was prepared to offer them the greatest reward. When Sir John Hawkwood withrew his forces, the Veronese army charged in pursuit – only to find Sir John's English mercenaries waiting for them. Inset shows the cavalry of the White Company which were divided into "lances", each of which consisted of a knight, a squire and a page.
