27 July marks a double anniversary in the history of aviation. Test pilot Group Captain John Cunningham was born in 1917 and in 1949, on his 32nd birthday, he flew the first test flight of the prototype DH 106 Comet, which was to become the world’s first commercial passenger jet airliner.
