15 July marks the anniversary of the execution of the Duke of Monmouth during the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685. Sir James Scott was a nobleman, the illegitimate son of Charles II, who led an unsuccessful attempt to depose King James II, his uncle.

Monmouth was exiled to the Netherlands when he attempted to take the throne from his uncle. He landed three ships in Dorset but was soundly defeated at the Battle of Sedgemoor. Monmouth was captured and executed on Tower Hill.
