5 July is the anniversary of the founding of the Salvation Army by Methodist preacher William Booth and his wife Catherine. Originally known as the East End Christian Mission, Booth radically transformed the “volunteer army” he had created, renaming it The Salvation Army. Their mission to bring aid to the poor and hungry was summed up in “the three S’s”: soup, soap and salvation.
