Tower Bridge. Illustration by Fred White

30 June marks the anniversary of the opening of Tower Bridge, which spans the Thames River. The bridge (not to be mistaken for nearby London Bridge) combines both a suspension bridge and a double leaf bascule bridge, the two towers housing hydraulic engines which can raise the two halves of the centre section to allow shipping to pass under the bridge.

The bridge was officially opened on 30 June 1894 by The Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII) and his wife.
