This unusual picture of Marie Antoinette approaching the guillotine in a shroud-like robe is a stark image of the fall of the Bourbon Queen-Consort of France, whose lofty disdain for the Parisian poor has been immortalised in her apocryphal remark, “Let them eat cake”; she might have made it, even if she did not, and in this picture there is a bleak atmosphere of Nemesis hanging over the scene of her impending execution.
