Holofernes, picture, image, illustration

The Israelites defending the besieged hill city of Bethuliah

Holofernes was a feared and fearless general favoured by Nebuchadnezzar, and therefore sent by him to punish those peoples who opposed his reign. He lay siege to Bethuliah with a huge army, and certain victory only eluded him on account of a beautiful Hebrew woman called Judith. She made her way into the enemy camp, seduced the commander-in-chief and decapitated him when he was drunk. She then returned to Bethuliah with the head of Holofernes.
