Our picture shows the Annunciation, in which the angel Gabriel reveals to Mary that she is to give birth to the Son of God. After this momentous news the Virgin Mary sings her hymn of praise, the Magnificat, which would become the first of the great church canticles. It has been set to music from the days of Gregorian chant up to the present, with many great composers like Byrd, Palestrina and J.S.Bach writing works of transcendent beauty and genius.
