The astonishing story of Elijah has many thrilling moments, and the confrontation between himself and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel is one of the truly epic scenes in the Old Testament. A drought and famine prevail, and the Israelites are praying to Baal for deliverance. Elijah wishes to show the prophets of Baal, as well as the believers, the folly of their idolatry. He intends to reveal the awesome power of God in a contest where each party builds an altar and prays to his god to light the sacrifice. The idolaters do so and pray for hours to no avail. Elijah has his own altar drenched in water, and then invokes the intercession of God, praying for Him to set the altar alight. God sends his fire and burns Elijah’s sacrifice. The prophet then calls for rainfall, and the drought and famine are brought to an end.
