Thomas Hosmer Shepherd was born in France in January 1792 and was baptized at St. Luke’s, Old Street, on 24 February 1792 . He was the son of George Shepherd and his wife Nancy. He was the younger brother of George Sydney Shepherd (1784-1862), the family living in France until the outbreak of war.

Shepherd was hired to illustrated architecture in London, and later Edinburgh, Bath and Bristol, engravings of his painting used as illustrations in many books. Shepherd’s work, mostly topographical, was characterised by its attention to detail and used people, carriages and horses to bring street scenes to life. His book, Metropolitan Improvements: London in the nineteenth century, was published in 1827. Other ‘London’ books by Shepherd include London and its Environs in the Nineteenth Century (1831) and London Interiors (c.1841).

He was married to Jane M. Shepherd and lived for most of his life in Islington (Chapman Street, Elizabeth Terrace, Bird Buildings). His children included Frederick Napoleon (8 June 1819, who went on to become an engraver), Jane Maria (c.1825-1851), Emma (c.1825), Thomas Hosmer (c.1826-1847), Valentine (c.1828-1829), Roseli Laura (later Reynolds, c.1831), Valentine (c.1833) and Helen (c.1835).

Shepherd died in July 1864.
