The picture shows a soldier flashing the sun off a burnished shield. This is an early form of military signal. It is called Heliograph. In 1870, Henry Mance, working with the British Army in India, invented a modern version of the heliograph which uses a mirror to turn the sun's rays into a signal. Of course, it only worked in sunny climates.
