Salvation Army

Active selection in cart:
Salvation Army. Many of Booth's tactics shocked a great number of Victorians, but perhaps what angered them most was his elevation of women's status. From the very beginning, women were recruited into the Army with equal status with men. Left above: William's wife, Catherine. Right above: Florence Booth, wife of the second General, Bramwell Booth. Salvationists began to use brass instruments to accompany hymns. The picture is based on an old sketch of "Our Whitechapel Soldiers marching the Ratcliffe Highway, London in 1886". The women are playing tambourines. Original artwork for illustration on p17 of Look and Learn issue no 656 (10 August 1974).
