Mount Vesuvius volcanic eruption

Active selection in cart:
The picture shows a cross-section of the inside of Mount Vesuvius, the volcano whose eruption in AD 79 destroyed the Roman city of Pompeii. In the explosion, lava flowed for five miles before it cooled to a stop. Lava and magma are both molten rock, but magma is the name given to molten rock below the earth's surface and lava is what it is called when it reaches the surface. Its temperature when it first leaves the volcano can be as high as 1000 degrees centrigrade.
