Prince Hal, later King Henry V. Whether fact or fiction, the story of Henry brushing with the law by boxing Judge Gascoigne's ears has become part of English history (top left). A fearless friend: even as a young man, Henry showed the kind of courage in battle that was to become legendary of him as a king. At Shrewsbury in 1403, still only 15 years-old, he helped his father keep his crown in the battle with Harry Hotspur. Wounded in the cheek (right), he refused to retire from the field. An enemy to be feared: when Henry parted company with his old friend Sir John Oldcastle, he did so with a vengeance. The respected knight, suspected of being a Lollard, was tracked down, arrested and dragged through the streets of London on a litter (bottom) before being burnt to death.
