Women Doctors. In 1960, Elizabeth Garrett took her first steps on the long road to becoming only the second woman doctor when she went to train as a nurse at Middlesex Hospital. By various "feminine dodges" she gained entry to medical lectures and even the dissecting room. Top inset: Sophia Jex-Blake (1840–1912). Her determination overcame all barriers to the medical profession. Bottom inset: Elizabeth Blackwell (1821–1910), the first woman doctor to practice in Britain. Original artwork for illustrations on p18 of Look and Learn issue no 1016 (29 August 1981).
