Spartan army on the battlefield, ancient Greece

Active selection in cart:
Spartan army on the battlefield, ancient Greece. The disciplined and well-trained Spartan infantry were more than a match for Hippias' lightly armed Thessalian cavalry. Inset shows a Spartan hoplite. His head, chest and legs are protected by armour, and his principal weapon is a spear. The device on the shield, a Greek capital L, stands for Lacadaemon, another name for Sparta. Original artwork for illustration on pp8–9 of Look and Learn issue no 984 (17 January 1981).
