Slaves working on a plantation in the West Indies

Posted in Africa, Farming, Historical articles, History, Industry on Friday, 20 November 2015

This beautifully painted but disturbing picture is a detailed image of a typical sugar plantation in the West Indies, with the industrious black slaves wielding machetes among the crops and the overseer carrying a whip as he watches their labours in the heat beneath a tropical azure sky.

Life in the Monasteries

Posted in Architecture, Bible, British Countryside, Education, Famous landmarks, Farming, Historical articles, History, Institutions, Music, Religion on Thursday, 19 November 2015

This marvellous aerial view of a monastery is a deceptively charming picture which carefully shows the layout of the entire monastic complex. It shows such typical and essential features as the Chapter House, cloisters, cellar, infirmary, Misericorde or rest room, along with the kitchen, refectory and dormitory. Outside lies the well and the orchard. We can also see the Abbot’s House on the right, near the fish pond. The mill, of course, sits on the river by the bridge, while the almonry serves as an official building next to the entrance.

An early mediaeval Anglo-Saxon village

Posted in Animals, Architecture, British Countryside, Farming, Historical articles, History, Plants on Thursday, 19 November 2015

This well-researched and detailed picture shows a bird’s-eye view of the agricultural layout of an Anglo-Saxon village. Strip-farming methods are clearly shown, along with the market place and a Village Cross. The Lord of the Manor’s house sits in an imposing compound surrounded by a high fence, which both protects and reinforces the social significance of property and land ownership so evident in this revealing image.

A mediaeval Anglo-Norman village

Posted in Architecture, British Countryside, Castles, Farming, Geography, Historical articles, History, Invasions on Thursday, 19 November 2015

Our carefully researched picture is a bird’s-eye view of a riverside Anglo-Norman village as it might have appeared sometime after the Domesday Book was compiled by order of William the Conqueror. We see the dominant castle, the largely Anglo-Saxon church and the already familiar appearance of the English manor house. These, along with the thatched village houses and the distant windmill, are elements of domestic and agricultural architecture which form the pattern of rural English building for a millennium.
