Johnson, born in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1808, was sworn in following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Johnson was a controversial figure as he favoured the position of the white South, which led to his being attacked politically by Republicans.

He had become Vice President only a few weeks before when Lincoln took office but, politically, he did not identify with either Democrats or Republicans, although he later rejoined the former as a Senator of Tennessee from 1875, shortly before his death that year following a stroke.
