5 July marks the anniversary of the publication of Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica – Natural Principals of Mathematical Philosophy – by Sir Isaac Newton, in which he described the laws of motion and the law of universal gravitation, two of the cornerstones of modern physics. The book, published in three volumes, appeared in 1687.
