4 July is Independence Day in the United States, celebrating the recognition of America’s independence from Great Britain. During the American Revolutionary War, a resolution of independence was passed by Congress on 2 July 1776, although the anniversary celebrations take place on 4 July as this is the date on the Declaration of Independence composed over the next two days.

The American War of Independence continued to be fought until 1781 and Britain abandoned all claims on the United States with the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
