The Battle of the Somme. Illustration by James E. McConnell

1 July marks the anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme. It remains the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army, with 57,470 casualties, of whom 19,240 were killed or died of their wounds. The battle dragged on until November, by which time there had been over 1.5 million casualties between the two sides.
