The Battle of Gettysburg, the turning point of the American Civil War

1 July is the anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of Gettysburg, the turning point of the American Civil War. Fought in 1863, the Union successfully repelled attacks by the Confederate Army under Robert E. Lee, ending Lee’s invasion of the North.

Pickett’s Charge occurred on the third day – an assault at Cemetery Ridge in which 12,500 Confederates attacked the Union line, running into a wall of rifle and cannon fire. The 3-day battle resulted in around 50,000 casualties.
