Lord George Lyttleton, 1st Baron Lyttleton, was a British politician and statesman, educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford.
He was a member of the Whig Opposition to Robert Walpole in the 1730s and later became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1755. Lyttleton was also a patron of the arts, supporting Alexander Pope and Henry Fielding. Fielding dedicated Tom Jones to him.
He died in August 1773, aged 64, and his last words are said to have been:
“The evidence for Christianity, studied with attention, made me a firm believer of the Christian religion. I have erred and sinned, but have repented.”
