On 5 June 1851, the novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin began serialisation in the American abolitionist newspaper National Era. Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe (pictured below), the novel depicted the lives of slaves in the United States and, read by millions in America and abroad, sparked a national debate and energized the anti-slavery movement in the north of America. Harriet Beecher Stowe became a celebrity and met Abraham Lincoln.
