2 June is the anniversary of the marriage of Edward, Duke of Windsor, and American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Only a few months into his reign as Edward VIII, the King caused a constitutional crisis by proposing to Mrs. Simpson. It was argued by the British government that the people would never accept her as Queen and Edward abdicated after only 325 days on the throne.

Edward’s abdication led to the coronation of his younger brother, George IV in 1937.
