This astonishing picture is unusual in that it illustrates the moment Nelson was shot on the deck of HMS Victory by a French sharpshooter from the upper rigging of the French ship Redoubtable, as the two vessels interlocked during the Battle of Trafalgar. The musket ball passed through the Admiral’s arm and into his lower back, a mortal wound from which the great man died some few hours later, but not before he had heard news of his fleet’s victory.
