This colourful Shakespearean picture shows a famous spectacle in Tudor England, that of the much-dreaded Royal Elizabethan Progress. Queen Elizabeth would travel with her entourage across country and counties to various ancestral homes of her aristocratic courtiers and ministers, where she expected food, entertainment and intellectual stimulation, a not inconsiderable strain on the purses and imagination of England’s nobility.
