Our colourful picture is like a Victorian narrative painting, and shows a Dickensian cross-section of the teeming humanity which flocked to California after the discovery of gold there in 1848. Many of the tens of thousands went on foot, others by wagon and carriage and many thousands journeyed to America from Europe and beyond.
