The best pictures of the stars and stripes show the American Flag at various stages of its history.
The first picture shows the flag in 1795 and the flag shortly after 1818, when Congress decided to add only stars for new states and no more stripes, settling on just thirteen to symbolise the original British colonies which declared Independence from Great Britain.
