James Marshall discovers gold at Sutter’s Mill

24 January marks the anniversary of the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill, California, the beginning of the California Gold Rush, in 1848. The sawmill was owned by John Sutter at the bank of the American River. An employee/partner named James Marshall first found several flakes of gold and he and Sutter tried to keep the discovery secret. Eventually word got out and 300,000 people descended on California over the next few years.
