Passenger-carrying hovercraft have been in use since 1962. Illustration by John S. Smith

12 December marks the anniversary of the patenting of the first hovercraft in 1955. Although the principals of using an air cushion to lift a vehicle have been mused over for centuries, the key principals of the design of the modern hovercraft were worked out and patented by Sir Christopher Cockerell, although the military showed no interest and Cockerell approached the National Research Development Corporation. The first commercial passenger-carrying hovercraft entered service in 1962.
